With its flagship, World of Tanks, succeeding on the market for already 3 years, Wargaming recently hosted a huge press event we were invited to attend in Paris. There, we were granted the opportunity of putting our hands on the upcoming 9.0 patch for the PC version, as well as on the tablet version World of Tanks (WoT) Blitz and even the WoT Xbox 360 edition, yes you got it right, the Xbox 360 version.
The whole event was brimming with things Wargaming got us used to with their events: There were tanks and authentic war machines everywhere, accompanied by girls in cosplay dresses and, of course, multiple stations to get involved in the different WoT versions. We even set our eyes on a sandbox with RC tanks able to shoot at targets, yes indeed! However, you should better have a look at the pics we’ve taken for you to get a real impression of all this.
First of all, we directly headed to the PC station in order to check the upcoming patch, supposed to set the basics for the entirety of revolutionary modifications the title will undergo in the course of 2014, such as the Havoc engine and all its visual enhancements and new physics Wargaming is currently working on.
This new patch will introduce a host of changes and new features which include 10 HD tank models substituting the old ones, overhauled maps - some of which receive drastic and others only minor modifications - the highly anticipated historical battle game mode as well as tank balancing all across the board. In addition to enhanced shaders on every tank to ensure their appearance can compete with the new HD models, players will moreover enjoy all-new tanks, multiple visual enhancements, a remastered soundtrack as well as UI changes and more.
Developers are still working on the most drastic modifications supposed to take WoT to the next level in regards to its graphics, as their final goal to deliver a much more realistic gaming experience requires the dedication of lots of time and testing. Although it seems to be a pretty tough task, the team is convinced they will manage to succeed. And we’re already looking forward to experience destructible assets across the whole map and so on.
While playing, we personally had a very enjoyable experience; the gameplay remained the same as it currently is, however the improved visuals and modifications make for a more balanced and enhanced experience.
So, let’s move on from the PC version to that one for tablets called World of Tanks Blitz, which, after CB testing, is going through the final tweaking and fixing at the moment before launching on iTunes. While the focus is currently on iPads, there are already plans for a future Google Play version.
WoT Blitz offers intuitive controls that are at hand when necessary and runs smoothly; developers did a good job the responsiveness of controls as well as the UI. Keeping the UI basics in and out of battle, they managed to display the elements in the most intuitive and effective way on touch screens. Players therefore won’t miss any feature, but nevertheless will become aware of the enormous change when playing it for the very first time. They will furthermore be able to move each and every interface element to whatever they see fit, which is an awesome feature by itself.
The visuals can’t be compared to those of the PC version, of course, but are adequate for tablets and still quite cool. The initial version will feature a limited amount of maps and tanks, which won’t be the same as in the PC version, for quite every aspect has been revised to work well with the tablet gameplay and its capabilities. In addition to multiple other numbers, even the time limit for battles has been modified in order to cater the more casual audience of tablet users.
Regarding World of Tanks Xbox 360 edition, we had a similar feeling as when playing the original WoT versions for PC. As of now, the array of available maps and tanks still isn’t as wide, however the live servers are continuously provided with new content, so it only seems to be a matter of time till this version catches up with the one for PC.
The most attractive aspect of this title is the opportunity for Xbox LIVE gold account holders to play it for free, comfortably sitting on their couch and punching their gamepad. We got the chance to also test this version, but, being PC gamers, have to admit that the controls initially left a strange feeling as it was the case with the tablet version. However, a few battles fought, we got used to them. The developing team heavily focused on controls and gameplay, resulting in a quite remarkable game.
To put it all into a nutshell, WoT is rolling at full speed with all its upcoming versions for different platforms. You should definitively give it a shot and we’re quite sure this won’t disappoint you if you’re into war games.
