World of Warships is the latest addition to the Wargaming “World of…” franchise, joining up with World of Tanks and World of Warplanes to add a trilogy of land, air and now sea based WW2 strategy shooters. Unlike its sister titles Warships has a much slower and strategic pace to the gameplay, but otherwise joins them on the same platform with much of the same business plan as those titles.

 


The game can be downloaded and played for free.

 

 


There is no required subscription, but a subscription for a Premium Account is available, which gives players XP and Currency boosts to help them advance more quickly in the game, there are different costs for the Premium Account based on how many months you wish to buy.

 

 


Any patches or updates are provided for free, the game has no DLC or Expansions.

 

 


Micro-transactions come in two forms, either purchasing Doubloons premium currency which is an alternate currency in game for buying ships, mods, crew, consumables, etc. or buying unique Premium Ships, which are exclusive ships with unique graphics, their own stats and generally all around improved performance.

 

 


Doubloons help players climb the tech tree ladders much more quickly as well as keeping their ships outfitted with necessary consumables, but these are all things that can be purchased with normal currency after some gameplay. Premium ships offer a little extra advantage against their peer ships in the same tier, but the advantage isn’t so great as to offset skill.

 

 


There are no customization options.

 

 


Some ships are exclusive Premium Ship content only available through cash payments.

 

 


There is no auction/market style option in the game.

 

 


Players are provided a handful of free port slots to store their ships, but they must otherwise spend gold to purchase more port slots, or get a free slot when they become Premium Account members.

 

 


All maps and modes are available to free players.

 

 


There are no limitations to game modes or maps based on your account type.

 

 


It’s more than possible to get your enjoyment from the game without ever spending cash, and plenty of players do, however, it can be a slow and steady grind trying to unlock new ships, particularly higher tier ships and the XP/credits that non Premium Account members earn is quite low, meaning it takes all that more longer. Ultimately if you’re happy just playing the game and not always chasing the next best ship, then you’ll be fine.
