Players Speak about Summoner’s Legion

Summoner's Legion - F2Peer Review headlogo - EN MMOReviews

We’re taking a look at R2 Games’ latest browser free to play Card Collecting MMO Summoner’s Legion in our latest F2Peer Review article, an intriguing card game unlike that which most would have seen (Hex, Hearthstone, Magic The Gathering) and instead features a three lane battle map where players must not only build their deck of units but also strategically place them as they constantly move towards the enemy Champion to attack them. It’s a different take on the genre and we got our players/readers to check out the game for themselves and share with us their thoughts.

  • JimSlam: I’m a big TCG fan as it’s one of the few competitive games where it really is a personal 1v1 the majority of the time, so I like that personal competitive element, albeit Summoner’s Legion does have a PVE co-op mode, but I didn’t really get too much into that. The game is fun and easy to pick up, but in general the AI provides very little challenge if you have a semblance of logic about you, though my Hearthstone experience did probably help me be more strategic when planning on deck builds, which was easy to do with the gold I was making through playingw. My biggest problem with the game is that as you level up the came becomes more and more imbalanced, particular cards become extremely popular and overused due to their OP nature and almost all the top players were Mages and Rangers due to them being superior. The matchmaking was a pain as more than a few times it put us up against players that vastly out-levelled us; whilst I don’t want an easy fight and love a challenge, I don’t want a one sided ass kicking.

  • IAMJohn: Extremely easy to pick up and play and the early progression playing through the PVE content was at a nice pace which was extremely helpful in getting to grips with the unexpected mechanics that I’m not used to with a card collecting game. As it was different to other TCG/CCGs I’ve played I thought it was going to be extremely poor, but I actually found it a lot more interesting and tactical than other games, though I don’t really have the time (or inclination)to get ultra-competitive, I loved the tactics focused combat that reminded me of Fire Emblem or Pox Nora, more unit based strategy games fighting across a grid/

  • Kittypride: I was surprised at just how involved the game could be with all the different features that were available, which thankfully were unlocked bit by bit as I progressed so I didn’t feel too overwhelmed. The game is very fun and easy to get into, sticking mostly with the AI story campaign and the dungeon co-ops; the co-op in particular I really enjoyed, at least when I was playing alongside others who seemed to know what they were doing. The AI wasn’t massively challenging, but the players in the Arena were a little bit more creative with their strategy and so I didn’t do quite as well against them, spending time mulling over my decks to only get smashed by someone in the Arena was quite disheartening!

  • Ballgon: This could have been a great game, unfortunately it’s being published by R2 Games, so it probably already was a great game previously that they reskinned, renamed and republished to eke more money out of the players; that’s what they normally do. Playing against AI is boring because it’s so easy and provides no challenge, whereas the Arena provides a massive balancing issue due to the crappy matchmaking or everyone only using “Rush” tactics to win and lacking no skill. Basically you can’t get a decent game whatever you play. There’s just better card games to spend your time and money on.

  • Tenebrae: Though the game isn’t typically my style of game, which isn’t anything to do with Summoner’s Legion and more that I’m not a huge TCG/CCG fan, the game did a lot of things well and was obviously geared towards higher levels of customization with the number of units available and the upgrade feature. For me it was a little too much and not casual enough to just jump in and play a few games instead of having to manage my deck all the time and keep tweaking it with each new card I unlocked. For players that like TCGs then it seems like it might be fun for them and worth trying out.

  • Elijah: For anyone that hasn’t played these types of TCG before then they’re quite different, with the same kind of deck building element and the booster pack style mechanics for unlocking cards, primarily the game plays more like a turn based battlemap strategy utilizing movement, positioning and skills (so lends itself well to the TCG similar style mechanics). For once I didn’t put any money down on the game as I won’t play it after the test, though the early gameplay did indeed seem fun, unfortunately it feels like it’s very much the same thing over and over, seeing the same cards and the same tactics, which given that there’s quite a lot of cards to choose from it suggests to me that certain cards/tactics are overpowered and so become too popular.

  • Your_Nemesis: I’ve always been a TCG fan so am always interested in trying out similar card games, I wasn’t expecting the tactical combat element and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoy it, combined with building up my deck it’s definitely a game I can see myself returning to at some point. The different blend of PVP and PVE features lends itself well to that RPG style, giving me something to do other than constant PVP fights it was fun to try out some of the other content and co-op PVE dungeon battles. Enjoyable and worth checking out if you are a TCG fan, if anything just to get an idea of how their system works and get a different experience.
