TERA or The Exiled Realm of Arborea to give it its full title, is a free to play fantasy based 3D MMORPG from Bluehole Studio, published by En Masse Entertainment (NA) and Gameforge (EU) and offers up some classic themepark based MMORPG gameplay with exciting action based combat. With our assembles cast of community members we’re taking a look at the game to get some thoughts on it in our F2Peer Review, the good, the bad and the ugly and to see if such a gorgeous looking game is equally as pretty under the surface.
- JimSlam: I loveTERA. There, I said it. Outside of MOBA and FPS I have to say that TERA does an absolutely bang up job when it comes to competitive gameplay and PVP and it’s all down to the action based combat ie. no tab targeting, which is the weakest aspects of a lot of MMORPGs these days. Whilst the PVE content has generic moments at times, the joy of taking on the BAMs (Big Ass Monsters) rarely gets old, but PVP is really where it shines. Duels, Deathmatches, Guild v Guild and open world PVP with dedicated PVP servers just provided everything you could want in an MMORPG. Watch and learn other developers!
- IAMJohn: TERA is very fun, has amazing graphics and a pretty robust action combat, but it’s biggest downfall is that it isn’t THAT different from a lot of other MMORPGs that have already been around for quite some time. If it’s your first MMORPG then I dare say you would have a long lasting relationship with it and you wouldn’t go wrong, it has a lot to offer and is very fun even at later game, otherwise a lot of the elements and mechanics outside of the combat style are very similar.
- Kittypride: Overall I think TERA is a pretty decent game, there are a ridiculous amount of mounts available in game, some truly original ones as well such as the giant green goblin “Munchhausen” who you ride on the back of, huge pigs, mechanical crab spiders… more than we could ever hope to get. The achievement system isn’t too bad, though a lot of the achievements focus on killing key mobs and there’s not much in the way of exploration needed to unlock them, but you do get titles with some so I definitely enjoy that.
- Ballgon: Players go on way too much about the action style combat and really hype it up to make out like TERA is so amazing, well outside the combat the game actually has very little to offer, seriously… like… nothing. The questing is the same tired system we’ve seen hundreds of times before, go here – kill x number of these – come back, over and over. With the Vanarch system a single player can actually be in charge of, well, the server; they can literally turn off open world PVP on the PVP server.. yes, because we really want any moron in control of something like that. Dumbest. Idea. Ever.
- Tenebrae: Whilst the game lacks slightly in the character appearance customization, it does make up for it in the vast number of items you can dress your character up in, that and it actually has a dedicated RP server and pretty large and active RP community. The different races and immersive and in depth lore really allows players to feel like they are part of the world
- Elijah: I like TERA, but it definitely does suffer from grind in places, playing long sessions back to back you do sometimes feel like the quests are a bit rinse and repeat formula. Whilst it doesn’t redefine the genre, even with its action combat and political systems and more recently added Sky Castle feature, it definitely has a lot of potential for good solid fun. The repetitive questing is definitely is the weakest aspect of the game, if this was improved and made a little more unique then I’d say TERA could easily be one of the best MMORPGs on the market.
- Your_Nemesis: Definitely taking a lot of its inspiration from more modern day themepark MMORPGs like World of Warcraft, TERA at its core is a decent enough MMORPG but just falls short on the mark in a few key places. I personally love the idea of the Vanarch system, I love the open world PvP, I love the action combat, it ticks so many boxes that have that real innovation about them, but then it is all wrapped up in classic generic (albeit pretty) MMORPG bow that makes it like all the other MMORPGs out there. I will say that playing action combat definitely spoils other MMORPGs that lack it, it’s a strong feature and really makes you realise how bad/boring tabbed combat is and actually requires some skill.
So that’s what our players think, but what about you? Do you play TERA? If not then why not? What do you like or hate about it, and what do you think about our players’ opinions? Let us know in the comments!
