Things We Love About Elvenar

Elvenar - news

Elvenar is a free to play browser based strategy that focuses on building up your own settlement, raising an army, and engaging in tactical turn based battles across a huge fantasy world. Players can build up their economy, military and research dozens of technologies to shape their city and engage in PVE combat or trade with players to build up strong relations. There’s a few things about the game we’re not so fond of, but for now let’s focus on the good.

Exploration
We love being able to explore the world map on our own. The world map is broken up into hundreds of hexes, each one hiding different relics, enemies and challenges that you can find for yourself, adding a true element of exploration to the game. So many games offer everything to you on a plate, so it’s refreshing to play a game where there is an air of mystery to traveling the world and not knowing quite what you’re walking into (not unless you use your scouts first!). Players being scattered around the world means you are constantly contesting each other’s territory and so adds an interesting meta game to exploration as well.

Free Research Progression
You can advance your technology however you wish. The branched tech tree offers a lot of freedom for players to explore and advance down the tree however they like, focusing on certain technologies or even leaving others by the wayside if they have no interest in them. Other than key final tier technologies which are required to advance into the next era, the technology research system offers a lot of flexibility to individual play styles. Furthermore, the design of the tree is self-contained enough that adding additional technological eras can and does happen with ease, meaning players always have new technologies to work towards as and when they are added.

Strategic Combat
Combat occurs across a hex turn based battlemap. Unlike many other games in this genre, the combat side of the game really shines as it offers actual combat strategy where players must move their characters around a hex based map trying to out think and outmanoeuvre their opponent. With terrain features shaping the battleground, the variety of melee and ranged focused units, players can gear their entire empire towards a particular army composition and battle style. Working out different strategies is part of the fun, utilizing your melee units to block incoming enemies and attacking them from a distance with ranged, or trying to flank the enemy and get to their powerful backline; combat is by far the strongest element in the game.

Alternatives to Combat
Combat isn’t everything. The game can be played equally by focusing on production an amassing wealth, no more is this demonstrated than when heading across the world searching for Relics; players can interact with the indigenous tribes that typically protect/possess these relics. Whilst attacking these rivals and taking the relic is an option, instead players can focus on paying tribute to take the relic, with no need for bloodshed. It’s not an option we’d take that often, being the warmongers that we are, but having the option is nice!

Graphically Stunning
The game simply looks gorgeous. Starting with the user interface and different menus, it looks simple and clean and is very intuitive to navigate; overall it feels graphically superior to a lot of other browser titles. Stepping into the game you can see the attention to detail in your settlements, from the environments you build on, the detail of each building and the little animated populous making their way around it, it is a breathing environment that evolves as your city does. Finally, the combat units and animations are splendidly done, creating fluid battles and exciting visuals to make combat considerably more immersive!

These are some of the things that we love about Elvenar, but what do you think? What do you love about this game? Would you add anything else to the list? We await your opinions! Let us know!!!!!
