Crossout at Gamescom 2015

We got a chance to head over to Gaijin Entertainment’s booth at GamesCom this year and check out their new shooter from developers Targem (Star Conflict) that sees players design, driving and pretty much destroying their own post-apocalyptic vehicles in an all-out battle: Crossout. Greeted by a presentation and general run down of the game we got to have a hands-on playthrough in a team deathmatch against some other players elsewhere in the building and check the game out first hand.

The main theme is, as mentioned, a post-apocalyptic world where people simply fight to survive, roaming around the desolate wastelands searching for fuel and components to improve and repair their vehicles; day to day life is one battle after the next; it has a real Mad Max feel about it. Translated into the game that means players get to craft their own vehicles from hundreds of components, ranging from various chassis options, wheels, tracks, engines, armor and weapons. As the setting is near future the types of weapons we see vary from shotguns and machine guns, circular saws and spikes, to rocket launchers and plasma weapons, combined together players can create some truly unique rides.

Players will progress through the game unlocking new items by fighting, between battles and in their garage they will get the chance to construct their new vehicles in ultra-detail with dozens of components that can be added to a chassis to different hardpoint locations. The design of your vehicle primarily comes down to how you want to play; throwing on some melee weapons that do some high levels of damage is going to require some heavier armor to protect your vitals, alternatively you can shed the weight, throw on some engines and a dozen wheels and fly around the battlefield firing off long range sniper rifles. The more you add to your vehicle, the heavier it becomes and in turn rides much more slowly and lacks handling, however, without armor then your internal functions can be exposed and vulnerable; players are able to destroy wheels, armor parts, weapons and more all trying to disable your vehicle by taking out the drivers cab.

Fortunately before jumping into a game we had the chance to try our vehicle out first in an open area where we could see how fast and mobile the vehicle was, as well as checking out its traction with a variety of incline walls to see whether we could climb them. In the middle of the area stood a variety of vehicles including the one we were driving, allowing us to shoot at it and getting an accurate idea of which areas were its vulnerable parts and if we needed to make any modifications.

Combat itself is as fast paced as you would expect, trying out a few of the pre-made vehicles we ended up going for a big 8 wheeler with a few mounted machine guns and grenade launcher; what we lacked in speed we made up for in firepower and as we trundled up at the back of each battle we were able to finish off quite a few of the enemy or put some poor sap who was stranded having lost all his wheels out of his misery. All of them handle differently, which really plays up the idea of making a more tanky heavy armored vehicle, or a long range scout with sniper rifle type weapons and lots of speed at the expense of armor. We only got to play in a team deathmatch, and right now we’re not sure what the final game modes will be, but we were told that there’s already a variety of maps available and some have their own hazardous terrain features in the form of acid pools; pretty cool.
