A free to play space shooter, Star Conflict gives players the chance to fight as part of a fleet in exciting PVP and PVE into the uncharted Sector 1337, going up against some truly challenging AI or face off against real world players.
Whilst the game has plenty to offer and the range of sips, roles and module customizations provide plenty of choice, the game falls short in many ways, and so we ask the question “What Would You Change About... Star Conflict?”
- Better Matchmaking between Tiers - One of the problems when playing a team based game is that as often as not the team with the most Tier 1 ships has pretty much already conceded a defeat, players being able to queue for a match with a Tier 4 or 5 ship as their primary, but then the rest of their ships being less and even as low as Tier 1 is just asking for punishment. It’s a very presumptuous player who thinks they can play, and survive, in a T5 game using their T1 ships and this is often enough to turn an entire team against one of their own teammates. Whilst there’s always reasons why players might not have enough ships (selling them, for example, which there’s never really a good reason to do if it means you don’t have enough upper tier ships) the result is always the same: more T1s, more easy kills for the enemy. Players should be forced to fill their ships slots prior to the game with the same level, or -1 level, Tier ship so that games are actually balanced.
- Random PVP Modes Suck - This is an unfortunate Catch 22 with the game, but one of the things we hate in general with all shooters is forced Random PVP Modes where you can’t queue for a particular game type, or at least blacklist one of the ones you really hate and simply don’t find fun. When it’s quite possible to get dragged into Team Deathmatch a few times in a row, if you don’t like the basic simplicity of that game mode then it can potentially ruin a play session being forced to play it over and over. The biggest problem is that the games’ population just isn’t that large, so giving players the option to queue for the type of game they want is likely to mean considerably longer queue times, however, by forcing Random PVP Modes it can put off a lot of players from sticking with the game, which depletes the games’ population and further drawing us away from the solution of turning Random modes off. There’s no solution here, just more something we don’t really like.
- Fighting With Not Enough Ships - In a similar tone to our first point, a major bugbear with the game is the ability to have players queue with only one ship slot filled, when a player is destroyed in their ship they get to use the next ship in their slot, essentially this gives a team more lives. If one team has a handful of players that only have one ship, whereas the other team has their players maxed out, then it becomes a battle of attrition and as soon as those one ship players are taken out then it’s a huge snowball effect. The developers either need to force players to fill slots, or at least have three or more (so as not to make it a huge hurdle to get into PVP) or at least have some decent Matchmaking where if there’s two players with only 1 ship then they at least don’t end up on the same team!
- Dreadnought Restrictions - Dreadnought ships were one of the bigger more recent additions that really did look cool. The problem is that there’s only a small amount of players that will ever get the chance of enjoying this feature; as a Corporation (guild) ship it first and foremost means players must be in a guild to even get a chance, but they need to be a GOOD guild as it’s a long grind to pick up that Dreadnought. From there you probably aren’t going to be trusted with the Dreadnought unless you are a high ranking member of the Corporation, and so bit by bit the chances of even enjoying this feature dwindles.
These are some of the things that we would change about Star Conflict, but what do you think? What would you change about this game? Would you add anything else to the list? We await your opinions! Let us know!!!!!
