EVE Online is an in-depth space based MMORPG that focused on trade, player economy, conflict, PVE and everything you could want from a feature packed title. As of November 2016 the game launched its permanent “trial” account in the form of Alpha Clones, a free account with full access to the game but with a few limitations to players. In checking out the game and this new addition we’re going to ask a number of questions, removing points for the more “premium paying” orientated answers and find out how free to play these Alpha Accounts actually are!

No. The game can be accessed and played for free.

 

 

Yes (but...) – -10%. The subscription is optional and players can keep their free to play “Alpha Clone” status indefinitely and still play the game, but with a few restrictions such as the types of ships and skills they can use. Players can acquire PLEX which buys them “Omega Clone” status for a set duration and removes these limitations, PLEX can be bought with real money but it is also an in-game item that can be traded, so players can also purchase their PLEX subscription with in-game “ISK” currency.

 

 

No. There are no content DLC for players to purchase.

 

 

Yes – -5%. Outside of PLEX, which is an in-game item that players can purchase, there are also skill extractors, ships skins and apparel and a variety of other items in the game using PLEX.

 

 

Yes (but...) – -5%. Skill extractors, character training, give players an edge, and the Omega status all give players a larger advantage against free to play Alpha Clones due to the limitations of ships and cross-factional gear unavailable to f2P accounts.

 

 

No. The customization options for free to play accounts and premium accounts is the same.

 

 

No (but...) – -10%. Whilst the factions themselves aren’t limited, of the 300+ ships available within the game there are only a few dozen available to players, alongside this Alpha Clone players of one faction can’t use the ships and technology of another, so the small selection of ships is made even smaller for free players.

 

 

Yes – -10%. There are certain limitations to the number of trade slots, broker levels, and unavailable trade skills that can restrict trading for free to play accounts.

 

 

No (but...) – -5%. Whilst there aren’t direct restrictions, one of the glaringly obvious inventory/cargo restrictions comes by way of the limitations on available ships, for example players that enjoy mining only get access to a Venture ship, which is severely limiting in comparison to even the Mining Barge which could hold far more.

 

 

Yes. The game doesn’t have any premium only areas

 

 

No. The end-game/high-end content in the game can be played by anyone

 

 

Yes – +10%. There’s plenty to do in the game even as an Alpha Clone with all the limitations, but aside from that players can earn their PLEX by purchasing it with in-game currency and so realistically, given enough time, players can build up enough PLEX to get full Omega Clone without ever spending cash and then keep playing to buy more.
