One of the highlights at Gamescom was the private presentation with Frontier's David Braben, who introduced us to Elite: Dangerous and answered some of our questions. All in all, it looks like a very promising game.
The game is being developed by Frontier Developments. They tried to find a publisher for the game but eventually decided to try crowdfunding to ‘Kickstart’ it, which went pretty well and now they’re going to publish the game themselves.
So in the private presentation (which we recorded and you can watch below) a backer from their Kickstarter campaign was playing the game while we talked to David, they showed us the ship upgrades available at the station, how you can upgrade your ship and change modules and weapons, they even have a paint layer where you can pick from different premade designs, which are available in the shop.
The game revolves around freedom, how players can do what they feel like, explore new systems, haul goods from one point to another, become a pirate, go vigilante and help the police, and much, much more. There are no preset warp-in/out spots, so travel is manually done even when traveling at super high speeds, you can be interdicted while doing so, which is pretty cool.
So the whole game rests on a faction system, players can work for the main factions, small third parties, or nobody. There is a reputation system that will track your progress with each one of them and every action has consequences, you can even be chased by the police, or even other players, you can run back to the space of a faction you’re in good standing with, to try and fly under the radar for a while.
David Braben put special emphasis on the universe map, which happens to be a replica of the actual real Milky Way, hundreds of galaxies with thousands of planets on it. They also move and rotate as they do in the real world, so as you move through space or to a planet, and watch the stars that is how they would actually look if we were there.
There are also plenty of tools on the 3D map, trade routes, events, stations, and much more, so players know what’s happening around them at all times, and can take actions accordingly. One the most interesting things about this game, is that despite it being an MMO game, it offers other ways of playing it, group mode and solo mode; the first one to play with your friends only, and the other one for when you don’t want to be bothered with PvP.
All the modes have PvP enabled and all of them work online, even the solo mode, so the stars, planets, reputations, and faction behaviors are shared between all players and when something happens to you even when playing solo or with your friends, that will affect other players who are playing the game as well.
