During E3, we were able to take a glimpse at BattleCry, the upcoming free-to-play multiplayer action fighting title which is still in its pre-alpha state but scheduled for release in 2015. Inspired by real-world organisations, the game features fast-paced and ferocious combat between factions. We were introduced to several of the available classes and factions for demonstration and were promised further information on each of them when beta testing drawn nearer.
BattleCry will offer 3 different factions, all of which are characterised by their own unique appearance, animations, play style, and so on, which provides them with individuality. While the Cossacks show off their bravery and ferociousness, the Royal Marines represent the majesty and discipline of the British Empire. In addition to each faction’s unique look and feel, players can also individually customise and personalise their characters.
The demonstration highlighted the game’s 5 major warrior classes, each of which is defined by 3 unique abilities with cool downs, forcing players to properly time their usage in order to have the best benefit possible. Each character uses one of two primary attacks on the left and right mouse buttons.
The Tec-Archer is the first ranged class able to unleash volleys of arrows with their tech bow, to throw daggers at short range or to charge their bow for a more powerful attack using the right mouse click. The Duellist’s cloaking ability allows her to get behind the enemy lines and strike where it is least expected either performing quick slashes with the left attack or using a lunge to close the gap between her and her targets and inflict damage. The Enforcer is a potent tank type character able to start massive attacks with their huge sword or to alternatively transform their sword into a shield to gain defensive abilities and block attacks.
The other two classes were just briefly presented as they are only scheduled for release as the beta approaches. On the one hand, there’s the Brawler, on the other the Gadgeteer. While the former is equipped with giant mechanical arms that enable players to punish their opponents in melee range, the latter is a perfect supporter with the ability to lock down whole areas with their powerful magnetic gun.
The combat we experienced was fast-paced, fierce, fun and extremely engaging. Players have the ability to dodge, dash across the map and use teleporters to get around and traverse long distances. An additional Adrenaline System allows players to build up adrenaline and fill their Adrenaline Bar when performing key actions for their class, which can be spent to boost their normal attacks or stored until the bar is full to release an ultimate ability.
At launch, BattleCry will offer several game modes and various maps. The alpha demo gave a foretaste of a Team Deathmatch on a map called "Fracture" with 16 players involved in the match. The final version, however, will support up to 32 players at a time.
There moreover is the unique "war effort" mode, a persistent game in which players will watch the tide of battle move back and forth over the course of a week. They will actively participate in the game by performing attacks and seizing territory and will be rewarded for their efforts at the end of the week.
Another interesting aspect of the title is how the developers intend to build community relationships: at the end of the game, players who performed well will be flagged up and they will be able to congratulate each other by saluting or awarding medals. Additionally, a newspaper will roll onto the screen celebrating those who performed well in the battle.
