During our attendance of the E3, we leaped at the opportunity to check out Obsidian Entertainment’s latest 3rd-person tank action MMO Armored Warfare. The demonstration took us into a PvE-focused co-op mode which had us play together with others and accomplish several challenging objectives as we faced the AI opponent (as opposed to the PvP-oriented 15 vs. 15 battle mode which is available as well).
PvE missions task players with completing one primary objective in addition to a secondary one, allowing the team to earn extra credits and bonus points. Moreover, each player also receives a personal objective that depends on their chosen vehicle/ role in order to encourage them to stay true to their role.
Our primary objective consisted in reaching an oil refinery, which forced us to cross a bridge and head right into the enemy lines. The secondary objective we were tasked with was a train that arrived on the map in order to re-supply the opponent units. It stopped at a refuel point for a specific period of time, allowing us the chance to gain bonus points for destroying its fuel storage tanks before its departure.
During the battle, we could check out the 3 different vehicle types/ roles which will be available in the game, which were the primary purpose of the E3 reveal: MBT, Artillery and Recon. Each vehicle type fulfils a different purpose in the game and plays utterly differently, making it suitable for their specific purpose.
The typical run and gun type vehicle, the MBT is heavy hitting and heavily armoured but quite slow in movement. These tanks are also a much larger target than the other vehicles and can therefore easily be hit if the player doesn’t utilise their surroundings, taking cover and being more aware of their strike points being vulnerable and pointing out behind walls. We were introduced to a British and a German main battle tank, both of which are still in service today, which indicates the effort to recreate the vehicles available with high accuracy.
The Artillery acts like a commander and adopts a top-down perspective onto the map, which allows players to realise enemy and allied positions. It moreover uses an arc of fire type attack (in comparison to ricochet fire that may occur with tanks). Artillery is particularly slow-moving and has very little armour, turning it into a sitting duck if not positioned well and defended by other players. This means the Artillery is often placed at the rear of the army to snipe targets at long range, only pushing forward as the battle moves along the map.
The Recon is a classic, fast-moving and mobile scout that is responsible for seeking out enemies and acts as the eyes of the battlefield, targeting opponents for the heavier tanks. Though not as heavily armoured as their MBT allies, the Recon, as well as the other vehicles, has some versatile options and can either act as a fast and lightweight scout or even become a Tank Destroyer by equip a heavy gun turret and replacing its tracks for tyres in order to quickly get in and out of combat.
