We lately had a glimpse at the open beta of Herokon Online to check out this upcoming fantasy MMORPG developed and published by Silver Style. The game allows players to weave their personal epic saga as they journey throughout the magical game world with their own hero to look for adventures. After a short registration, Herokon Online can directly be played in your favourite internet browser without any client download and for absolutely free.
Upon entering the game for the very first time, we got a wide overview over the variety of available races and classes. There were 3 races – dwarves, elves and humans - to pick from, each of which offered 3 distinct classes ranging from close quarter to long-ranged fighters. We opted for the dwarven race and the Geode class for our hero, which enabled us to wield destructive Earth magic in order to destroy our foes. You may then further personalise your character by choosing a name and gender as well as selecting from multiple distinct pre-fabricated facial traits, such as hair colour and style, nose, etc. So there’s a small but yet nice selection of options to customise your character’s details.
When setting our foot into the game world, we noticed the quite gorgeous graphics, some properly detailed character models with very realistic and accurate movement animation as well as completely illustrated environments which succeeded in creating this classic RPG feeling. The game opens up with a cinematic intro that we skipped for the sake of our first look video, but we presume that it’s supposed to give players a vague idea of the larger story and informs about the curse laid on their character (there’s another allusion to this by an ogre NPC players will come across).
The first thing we were tasked with was to fend off the goblins that attacked 2 kids and were part of a raiding party that had assaulted a group of travellers. While doing so, we realised that controls are rather simple; the left mouse button is used to select a target and then clicked again to start an attack while the number keys allow switching between the various attack types available to your character. At this initial level, the combat cinematic appeared a bit sluggish to us and wasn’t the most inspiring one. We therefore hope for attacks that will become more impressive and lavish when levelling up.
After defeating the goblins, we needed to head off in order to find the coach we easily discovered on the next screen, only to find out that the kid’s older sister wasn’t there any more. So we talked to the young boy we accompanied, whereupon a smaller window was opened to present a "cinematic" cut scene illustrating the boy’s explanations of what had happened during the assault. Although this was rather a simple moving illustration than a real cinematic, it yet added a neat touch that is more often that not disregarded in that type of RPGs.
We finally discovered the sister trying to escape from a band of attacking wolves and orcs and, of course, quickly intervened to dispatch them. She then told about her horse that panicked, got away during the attack and ended up with a crushed skull when coming across a black ogre, which we thought is a just punishment for being a coward.
So we were sent out to defeat that ogre, a level 23 creature situated in his camp, which appeared to be an impossible undertaking for us at merely level 3. However, this was only supposed to trigger the story arc, as the ogre teleported away all of a sudden, leaving some mysterious clues behind that further arose our interest. We set off for the next town, simply ignoring those "go and speak to" and escort quests to be able to have a look around in the game world instead.
On the whole, the title is quite imposing in regards to its visuals and it’s pretty obvious that developers have invested lots of time and effort to set up the story and create the lore, which should be sufficiently imposing and rich for those who have a knack on RPGs to truly bring the whole thing to life.
