We're putting Forge of Empires from InnoGames through its paces in our newest F2PMeter. In this browser based empire building strategy game, players work towards completing a PVE campaign and working cooperatively with others to construct world wonders as they advance through various technological eras and build up their city.

Whilst the developers say the game is free, let’s put the game into our F2PMeter to see just how free it truly is.

No. To play the game players do not need to make any payment.

 

 

No. The game has no subscription plan options, their business model revolves around purchasing premium currency Diamonds.

 

 

No. The expansions and DLC content are free updates in the form of regular patches.

 

 

Yes – -5%. Cash can be spent directly on buying a few different Packages that grant Forge points (for research), resources, premium buildings and units, depending on the package that is purchased. Players will also be able to purchase Diamonds as the main premium currency that can be spent in game to purchase further premium units or buildings, rush production and research and various other elements.

 

 

Yes (but...) – -10%. With resources, buildings, units and research all being purchasable with Diamonds it does mean that premium paying players can get ahead of their "rivals". There is no standard PVP in the game and the game focuses more on cooperative building with neighbours, but with Guild v Guild as there is a competitive nature then these premium options can offer ad boost.

 

 

No. There are no UI customization options.

 

 

Yes. The game doesn’t have any races or classes.

 

 

No. Anyone can use these systems, regardless of whether they are free to play or premium accounts.

 

 

No. Free to play and premium accounts have the same inventory slots.

 

 

Yes. Free and premium accounts can all visit the same areas.

 

 

No. There are no restrictions placed on high-end content for free accounts.

 

 

Yes (but...) – +5%. The game is mostly a PVE browser title and though there are elements of friendly competition there is nothing outwardly that would frustrate most players; those that are competitive in the game and want to try and earn victories before other players will no doubt have to spend some cash to get ahead and compete with those who freely purchase diamonds.
