Can free-to-play MMOs really be played for absolutely free? In today's F2Pmeter we put Marvel Heroes 2015 to a test, the recently re-launched version of Marvel Heroes, the superhero Hack&Slash MMO set in the Marvel Universe and created by David Brevik and Gazillion.
In this action RPG, players are able to play their favourite Marvel characters to engage in fast-paced, costume-changing and loot-filled action that even the most hardcore Marvel enthusiats will enjoy. But is it really free? Let’s find out.

No. – Players are able to create their account and download the client for free to begin playing with one of the free heroes.
No. – Players are able to simply continue enjoying Marvel Heroes 2015 for free; there isn’t any optional subscription either.
No. – At least for now, expansions are available for free to everybody.
Yes. – -5%. The shop offers new costumes, new heroes (single one as well as bundles), boosters as well as other convenience items for players to purchase.
No. – Not really, while players are able to purchase boosters, e.g. to increase their XP gain, there aren’t any items on offer which grant a direct advantage over others. Moreover, each hero can also be unlocked with the in-game currency.
No. – Marvel Heroes provides identical UI customisation options for paying and non-paying users.
Yes. – Players are able to unlock each and every hero in the game with in-game currency earned simply by playing the game. However, there’s also the option to purchase them with real-world currency).
No. – Marvel Heroes 2015 doesn’t feature an Auction House in the game but allows players to use a secure trading system which isn’t restricted in any way.
Yes. – -10%. All players begin with an identical amount of inventory slots; however, they may purchase additional slots with real-world currency.
Yes. – Everyone is granted free access to each and every zone and location.
No. – Marvel Heroes 2015 allows players to enjoy all the content, whether PvE or PvP, without having to pay a single penny.
Yes. – +10%. The MMO’s features can be fully enjoyed for free by everybody. If players choose, they may, of course, have an easier time in game by paying real-world cash to immediately get access to specific heroes or even XP boosters for levelling up more quickly. Those who opt for waiting a bit are able to unlock everything just by playing the game though. Further purchasable options only concern convenience items and cosmetics, which doesn’t greatly impact the overall experience.
Our F2Pmeter test therefore results in a 95% of free-to-play-ness for Marvel Heroes 2015.
