Here is a new instalment of our F2Pmeter series, this time investigating the free-to-play-ness of Ghost Recon Phantoms, Ubisoft's free MMOTPS. Let’s find out whether this free-to-play title can really be played for absolutely free.
This online instalment of the popular Ghost Recon Franchise originally began in beta as Ghost Recon Online and heavily emphasises teamwork in a mix of tactical gameplay and action-packed matches. Players are able to choose from 3 different classes, each of which has their own unique skills and devices.
Let’s remember that our testing candidates begin with a 100% of free-to-play-ness, and depending on how our questions have to be answered, this percentage will change.
So here we go...
No. All players have to do in order to play Ghost Recon Phantoms is to create an account and download the client.
Yes (optional) – -15%. Though being able to play for free, players also have the chance to pay for an Athena Armory Access premium subscription in order to receive additional storage slots, XP and currency boosts, unique items from earlier releases as well as early access to new items and other perks.
No. For the time being, everyone has been granted free access to all the updates released up to now.
Yes – -5%. Players are able to purchase weapons, armours, boosters and cosmetic items such as weapon camo paints and headgear, which are only available with premium currency.
No. According to what we were able to see so far, weapons and armour is available for regular in-game currency as well premium currency (and, of course, you get immediate access to them when using premium currency instead of waiting until you can afford the sum in regular in-game currency). Cosmetic items, e.g. camo paint for weapons and headgear, as well as XP/ currency boosters are the only items exclusively available with premium currency.
No. The game doesn’t offer any UI customisation options for purchase.
Yes. Each of the three classes available in GRP can be accessed by everyone for free right from the start.
No. Ghost Recon Phantoms doesn’t feature any action house whatsoever.
Yes – -10%. Additional storage space is available for purchase with real-world money (The Athena Armory Access premium account status also includes additional slots).
Yes. Players can freely access each game mode and map in the game.
No. There aren’t any restrictions whatsoever that would limit anyone’s access to a particular type of content.
Yes – +10%. Ghost Recon Phantoms appears to be well-balanced and fair for all players. Those who decide to pay will surely advance faster and get immediate access to weapons and armours while non-paying users have to earn them through gameplay. However, paying is rather a means of saving time than a way to gain a direct advantage, as boosters and cosmetic weapon paints or headgear are the sole items available for purchase that are unavailable to non-paying players.
Our F2PMeter test of Ghost Recon Phantoms results in an 80% of free-to-play-ness.
