We're checking the horse adventure MMO Star Stable, the 3D adventure game where players buy, ride and look after various horses on the beautiful island of Jorvik. Players can explore, race each other, complete quests and do most things you would expect in a traditional MMORPG that encourages social play. So let’s now ask a bunch of question to find out how free to play the game actually is.

 


Players don't have to purchase the game.

 

 


The free to play element of the game is only a free to try, once players reach level 5 they cannot progress in the game and must then become a "Star Rider" subscriber. Players get extra benefits and a discount to their subscription the longer they subscribe with the option of a lifetime membership.

 

 


Expansions and updates come free with the subscription; some new features (such as the MyStable) have been added and can also be accessed by free to play accounts.

 

 


The game has a premium currency known as "Star Coins" that can be earned through gameplay (not be free accounts) or purchased using real money. These coins can be spent in various locations in the game to get access to new horses, accessories and different gear items.

 

 


Whilst some items can benefit players and give them increased stats, the truth is that the game doesn't really have a competitive element other than some racing elements. Races are the same layout and so memorizing a route means the player with the highest stats will win.

 

 


There are no UI customization options.

 

 


The game lacks any classes or races (well.. It has races, but they're the sporty kind!); it doesn't have male characters though.

 

 


There are limitations on the Star Coin only shop where only premium currency can be spent for certain items; there is a further special shop only available to Lifetime Members that cannot even be accessed by subscribers.

 

 


Horse can be stored in a stable, the number of stables a player has is based off their Upgrade, which can be increased by spending premium Star Coins cash; free to play accounts can access this feature but cannot earn Star Coins through gameplay.

 

 


Only subscribers can access all the game content, this content is locked once players reach level 5.

 

 


Subscriber only content.

 

 


The trial content that is free to play up to level 5 can be enjoyed, and players can stick around in the game after that, but they are severely limited with the content they can; there available free to play portion is nothing more than a demo of what is awaiting subscribers.
