Good and Bad Things About DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online - Good & Bad headlogo - EN

We’re taking a look at DC Universe Online for our Good & Bad article this time round, the MMORPG set in the world of Batman, Superman, The Joker, The Flash, and whole bunch more of villains and superheroes from the DC comics. Free to play and cross platform the game has been around for five years and has definitely had a mixed bag of feedback, but let’s take a look at the best and the worst we think DCUO has to offer…

THE GOOD

The Cinematics - All the cinematics in the game are pretty good, but the opening SIX MINUTE intro to the game from Blur Studios is breath-taking as we see heroes and villains fighting and dying in a huge apocalyptic brawl in the future; it sets the tone of the game incredibly and definitely got us on the hype train.

Action Combat – Fighting in the game has a feel more like a beat em’ up than an MMORPG with the action combat style, chaining together your powers to make combos or dodging out of the way of attacks really does add to that superhero feeling.

You Can Play As a Villain – Most games focus on you being the good guys, or at least if the “bad guys” are playable then usually they’re just some misunderstood faction whose culture and philosophy doesn’t fit the status quo as pushed by the “good guys”. In DCUO you can play the villain and fight alongside Lex Luthor, The Joker and a bunch of other DC villains.

Iconic DC Setting – You can fight your way through the world and visit Gotham City, Metropolis and numerous other well-known comic locations; with so many DC TV shows and movies being released we’re also seeing new crossover content added into the game.

Legends PVP – Whilst the main portion of the game focuses on you making your own hero or villain, you can play as the iconic comic book characters in PVP, unlocking them (and various versions of them) and getting the chance to use their unique abilities in PVP.

Your Own Sidekick – What is a hero without their sidekick? Every player gets the chance to unlock their own fully customizable sidekick to call upon to help them in combat, they can even be customized in a costume similar to your own hero.

THE BAD

Boring Mentors – Each faction has three mentors that guide you through the game and storyline, each player chooses one of these specifically to have as their personal mentor. Unfortunately they rarely get that involved in you activities, and their Mentor quests can actually be done by anyone, even those that didn’t choose them as a mentor.

The PS3 Compatibility – Unfortunately the game has been released on console, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing on its own, but with the inclusion of it being compatible with the PlayStation 3 it means the dated hardware really holds the game back development wise and some features have to be trimmed from the PC version as the PS3 can’t handle it.

Easy Gameplay – The enemies you face throughout the game are just far too easy to beat, the lack of challenge really doesn’t create compelling gameplay nor does it make you feel heroic when you steamroll everything in your way.

F2P Stops at Level 30 – Once you reach level 30 the F2P portion of the game pretty much stops in terms of new content, players then have to buy DLC and new features or pay a subscription to enjoy any more of the game, which realistically makes the “F2P” aspect of the game more of a trial.

Repetitive Endgame Content – The content itself isn’t terrible, but the amount that gets released is at a slow pace, worse though is that players will have to constantly fight through the same tiered dungeons over and over and over to get gear; given how easy the content is it doesn’t feel fun and is just a tedious gear grind.

Empty Open World – the sandbox open world aspect of the game is like a barren landscape, walking through what should be the bustling streets of Metropolis is eerily quiet with only a handful of NPCs walking around the place just feels immersion breakingly empty.
