Good and Bad Things About Neverwinter

Neverwinter - news

Neverwinter is a free to play MMORPG based in the world created by Ed Greenwood, The Forgotten Realms (as seen in the Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights series of games), a popular tabletop campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. In the game players can choose from various classes and races and explore a story-arc campaign through a land of magic, dragons and of course dungeons.

The Good
D&D – The game is not only set in the amazing fantasy world of The Forgotten Realms, but it also uses elements of the D&D tabletop rules and mechanics in its various combat features
Lots of Expansions – The game has regular expansions that add lots of new content, from races, classes, dungeons, mechanics and new features, as well as seeing a stream of patches to add tweaks and smaller content
8 Classes – The game has eight classes true to the D&D setting, later in the game players can follow one of two Paragon Paths for each class which gives new skills and different styles of gameplay, essentially creating 16 classes in total
Action Based Combat – The game doesn’t allow players to use tab-targeting in combat, so they will have to rely on their own skill and reflexes to face off against some of the games’ greater challenges
Multiple Platforms – Originally launched on the PC platform, it was later launched on Xbox One, soon players can begin their adventure on PS4 consoles
The Foundry System – Players are able to design and create their own unique dungeons, complete with hundreds of items, NPCs with dialogue and quests and enemies to fight, all of which can be shared with the community

The Bad
Instanced Public Areas – Players are split between different instances of the open world to alleviate performance issue, however, it makes the game world feel extremely empty, particularly in quest areas
PVE Challenge Scaling – Most of the time PVE is far too easy (and in turn quite boring due to its simplicity), but it then ranges to being impossibly difficult for most, with very little challenge in between
Worthless Professions – Many of the professions in the game just aren’t worth taking, the amount of money that needs pumping into them to train them just doesn’t become profitable in the long run after the investment and looted gear that is better than crafted items is often easy enough to get
PVP Imbalance – The PVP system is too gear focused and high level gear makes those who don’t grind or pay for it unable to compete, this problem is further compounded when the best gear is available by spending Astral Diamonds (which can be acquired by spending cash) making a huge money sink
RNG Lootboxes – The game focuses on Lootboxes for a lot of its income, with a lot of the best gear put into these chests; the RNG (Random Number Generator) system behind Lootboxes means it is completely random what you get and effectively just gambling
The Foundry System – Our relationship with the Foundry is very love-hate, with everything that is good about it the feature is littered with issues and restrictions (item restrictions, missing core creatures, no quest-branching, limited number of players able to enter
