Good and Bad Things About Star Trek Online
Star Trek Online is a slingshot into the mission orientated sandbox world as seen in the scores of TV shows and films chronicling some of the galaxies greatest ships, captains and crews in their ongoing adventures of exploration and conflict. The game offers players the chance to pilot such ships and navigate a galaxy in turmoil... but is the future bright? Let's take a look at what we think is Good and Bad about Star Trek Online.
THE GOOD
Character Creation - The game offers a powerful customization tool to create the look of your own Captain, from a variety of classic alien races as seen in the show, players can also create new undiscovered aliens or recreate those lesser known races that the game hasn't covered
Ship and Land Content - The game divides it between two main states; as Captain of your crew and flying around space controlling your ship and crew, or beaming down to planets, ships and stations to engage in third person "land" content directly controlling your character
Episodes/Expansions - Episodes are still released quite frequently, offering new locations, systems, ships and story-arcs for player's continuing mission; old players see new content and new players step into a galaxy that should have enough to keep them busy for some time
Agents of Yesterday - In particular we love the Agents of Yesterday expansion that sees players travel back in time to the "The Original Series" period, a time of Cpt Kirk, mini dress uniforms and retro ships and consoles; all which have been perfectly captured with the new graphic and sound assets
Customization - Whether ships, crew or the player's own character, the game offers a wide scope when it comes to individual customization allowing players to refine their various elements to best compliment their preferred playstyle
The Foundry - An instanced based mission creator players can build environments, decorate them with items, populate them with NPCs that talk and give missions, and even enemies to battle against, and can then share them with the community
THE BAD
Heavy Combat Focus - Diplomacy plays a key part in Star Trek Online, particularly among the Federation where they try to avoid violence until it is completely impossible to do so; unfortunately in Star Trek Online players blasters always seem to be "set to kill" and what might start as a diplomatic mission always ends up in a blood bath
System Notification Spam - The game really wants players to know what other players have unlocked, whether ships, events, powerful items, it is a fairly constant stream of notifications popping up letting the entire game know when something does something notable... but the reality is that no one really cares what other people got and don't need constantly telling
DPS/Tactical Careers Dominate - The game offers three primary careers that generally determine which ships you use (among other things): Science, Engineering and Tactical. For end game PVP it seems like it is almost pointless trying to use anything other than Tactical DPS ships as others seem vastly underpowered
Poor Ground Combat - In comparison to the exciting and engaging space combat, ground combat feels bog standard, clunky and extremely basic; as though the developers knew they wanted a "land" element to the game for the sake of story and content, but that the actual combat side wasn't that important
The Foundry - With everything we love about the Foundry it is also a huge source of frustration due to the things it does lack or the limitations/restrictions artificially put in place; more so these downfalls are exacerbated by the fact that The Foundry in the Neverwinter MMORPG is superior in practically every way and is a constant reminder of "this is what it could be like but isn't"
