Pros: Great graphics, automated AFK mode for those who don’t want to play the game themselves
Cons: Automated AFK mode...

We’ve lately had a look at Monkey King Online, an MMORPG from R2Games which is based on the popular Chinese novels Journey to the West and features an all-star cast including the main hero Monkey. The MMO allows players to pick one of four different leading cast members to fulfil their task of saving the heavens from evil invaders. Being the hero of the hour, they are the only ones able to do so.

Monkey King Online - news

Monkey King Online features the popular Battle Ranking dynamic which tasks players with acquiring gear and companions as well as levelling up their skills in order to increase their level and subsequently their Battle Ranking, allowing them to tackle greater and more hazardous challenges.

In order to log in to the game, a quick registration is all that is required. You may select from various different servers before being faced with the character selection screen. And it’s nothing more than a character selection, as you aren’t given any customisation options, meaning that you will plainly be playing one of the four protagonists of the novels as you advance through the game’s story.

Similar to several other games recently published by R2Games, the graphics in Monkey King Online are pretty great and the visual style is pretty fantastic to behold, which is unquestionably a step into the right direction in comparison to the company’s older titles. The same also applies to the character models, which are more detailed. The movement, however, appears a bit clipped and a few animations aren’t as fluid as they could/ should be.

Your game retail space is completely taken up by a multitude of buttons and icons flashing all over the screen, which has almost become a standard features with this kind of games, trying to prompt players to log in, claim rewards, access features, share on Facebook, turn over a random card, spin a lucky wheel, or perform another task that constantly refreshes in order to encourage players to carry on playing the game and be rewarded for doing so.

So let’s move on to the game as such! *sighing* You can call it hardly a game when the automated system is activated by default, which basically means you character is running from one NPC to the another in order to hand in a quest and pick up another and head off to whichever area you are supposed to visit to slay the required mobs for your task. However, as far as we were able to notice, the place to hand in your quest is in most cases located next to the location that you are traversing on your way to where to slay the required enemies, which results in an extremely linear railroad map layout.

We feel that the automation is what really lets Monkey King Online down, since you’re not even playing anymore but rather feel like reading a book when taking in the story that the quests reveal (given that you’re not hastily skipping through them in order to raise in level). Due to the automated system, there isn’t any gameplay playing left.

Like some of the company’s other titles, Monkey King Online provides players with the opportunity to turn the automated system off in order to manually control their character and use their combat abilities and skills linked to hotkeys. The only issue is that there’s seemingly no other player doing that and the game simply is all but sufficiently strong to make a Diablo style action RPG. So when deciding to play the traditional way, the player’s levelling will inevitably progress significantly more slowly and be far grindier as it would be with the AFK mode activated.

The initial levelling pace is outrageously high; throughout our 20-minute trial we effortlessly reached level 30, which simply appears gimmicky. In our humble opinion, this isn’t the right way to make you feel stronger and leave the impression that you’ve already achieved something. We simply feel it’s useless when you’re not working for it.

Monkey King Online doesn’t travel a different road than R2Games others titles; it’s a continuous flow of various titles with rehashed features which only differ in their story back ground and graphics. You may get the impression that they want people to burn through one of their games to then drop it an continue with the next one which will provide them with exactly the same gaming experience for a limited period of time. If this is your idea of playing games, you will without any doubt enjoy the swift levelling process, allowing you to discover additional game features unlocked later on.
