Developed by Hardsuit Labs Blacklight Retribution is a free to play first person shooter where players are thrown into a dystopian cyberpunk future where mercenary Agents fight in deadly hardsuits wielding melee weapons, rocket launchers and other gear in team based battles. The game offers some interesting features with the HRV (Hyper Reality Visor) allowing players to change views to see enemies, mines, weapon depots and more through walls and other items that would otherwise block line of sight.

The game is free to play, but after going through our questions we’ll see just how free to play it really is!

 

Blacklight Retribution is completely free to download from their website.



There are no subscription options currently available with the game.



Expansions and DLC are incorporated into patches, which are currently provided as free updates.



There are many items in game that players can purchase with either earned GP currency or premium ZCoins currency, which can be purchased for with real money. When purchasing items with GP players need to reach a specific Agent (character) level to buy items, also these items are only temporary “Rental” purchases. When purchasing an item with ZCoins players can bypass the level requirement and can either rent the weapon or purchase it permanently straight away, alternatively players can purchase Blacklight Prime (for ZCoins) to unlock the option for GP bought items to be permanent and not rented.



Whilst the players who are looking to stay free to play and purchase their items with in game GP currency, they are additionally hindered by the level requirements and temporary rental status on weapons that otherwise don’t exist for players who can simply buy their top end items regardless of their own level.



There are no UI customization options.



There are no additional classes or races, the different characters aren’t available but they only offer additional skins.



There is no in game market or auction house.



Players have two available loadouts per character that they can switch between, a third Loadout slot is available with ZCoins or GP (but requires Blacklight Prime).



All maps and modes are available in the game.



There are no content restrictions for players.



If players just want to have something to pick up and play casually without getting too competitive then they can potentially enjoy the game with no issues. However, as even level one characters can buy items with ZCoins it means even in the early game players can be matched against other players who have bought the best gear available from day one of playing. As players will need to continue playing constantly to keep renting their weapons, ultimately they are likely to want to purchase at least the Blacklight Premium options to buy their items with GP permanently.
