At Gamescom, we had a meeting with InnoGames PR Fabio Lo Zito, who provided us with a glimpse at the present state of their up-and-coming cross-platform management titles Rising Generals and Tribal Wars 2, both developed from the scratch to run on mobile devices and browsers.
Founded in 2007, the German company, the sole purpose of which has been developing browser games, already has a remarkable portfolio of successful games and is now reaching out for the cross-platform market in order to enlarge their potential player base. Currently employing 350 people, InnoGames has tremendously grown over the years and lately moved into a new building in order be able to expand even more in the future.
As Rising Generals as well as Tribal Wars 2 are both still in development, we were shown how these games are running on iPad at the moment. The opener was Tribal Wars 2 and we noticed right away how much the quality increased in comparison to its predecessor.
Everything has been created with tablets in mind; players may even zoom in up close while animations and details are pretty good. We figured that the title is rather meant to be an upgrade than an all-new MMO as its features and gameplay are very much the same as in its predecessor Tribal Wars. Although tere are player vs. player options, the game’s main focus is a player vs. environment experience: Players will gather resources, construct buildings, upgrade them, and run the campaign made up of a number of maps they must complete by fulfilling tasks and conquering areas.
At the moment, the team is working on adjusting the UI for smaller screens, especially smartphones, which still requires some squishing and tweaking; the functionalities, however, are already working and Tribal Wars 2 is looking quite neat.
Fabio Lo Zito then continued with Rising Generals and presented their all-new game’s unique concept, which consists in players starting their game on a huge map along with many others. The focus is on player vs. player interaction and the premise is to conquer and control as many territories as players are able to. It’s absolutely possible to be completely wiped out by you opponents, which would result in having to start out anew on a different map.
There’s a paper-rock-scissors mechanic for the units players can set up, forcing them to select wisely which units to field in order to conquer new land. Players also have the opportunity to deploy spies to specific territories in order to acquire additional information on units, buildings, etc. However, the chance that they may get caught in every action they perform puts players in a quite delicate situation.
Rising Generals is about collecting resources, produces goods, and conquering the map, thus more focusing on player vs. player interaction and warfare than other games previously released by InnoGames.
