Bringing our first day at GamesCom to a close, we met with David Brevik, CEO of Gazillion and original creator of the Diablo series, in order to get an insight into the new updates for Marvel Heroes 2015. For those unaware, the game is an action RPG set in the Marvel universe which enables players to step into the shoes of literally dozens of different Marvel heroes to explore a vast world, either solo or cooperatively with other players, and take down all manner of threats posed by some of Marvel’s biggest villains.
Our first contact with the game goes back to GamesCom 2012, we then were granted the opportunity to meet the guys in London last year and now were sitting down once more to get to know what was new with the game that had recently been relaunched as Marvel Heroes 2015 to emphasise the enormous changes that are made with the game.
To head our meeting off, Brevik highlighted that Raids have been added to the game, which is the first action RPG to do so, starting with Muspelheim where players fight against such enemies as Lord Brimstone and Lady Hellfire, an interesting "sibling" mechanic that debuffs their damage (up to a max of 100% damage mitigated) as them continue to fight one of them, this way forcing players to switch between both bosses.
There are also new One-Shot events, one of which being the Bronx Zoo revolving around Mr. Hyde and Lizard, with the former combining his own transformation formula with Lizards’ mutagen and mutating the inhabitants of the zoo. Players will pass through beautiful new environments and locations, including an impressive tunnel aquarium, as well as a whole new host of opponents.
Moreover, new game mode called Brooklyn Patrol (similar to Midtown Manhatten) has been introduced which tasks players with working together in order to complete quests and faces them with multiple options on how they complete a mission. An Achievements feature will additionally be added soon, containing literally hundreds of achievements that range from multi-step achievements to others similar to those of other games which revolve around difficult, fun or challenging achievements that give rewards.
With the onset of Guardians of the Galaxy to be released soon, there already is a plethora of content in the game, including the 6 main characters Rocket Racoon (who was already in the game) that has been enhanced to have Groot as his pet companion and has a new Mecha ultimate allowing him to jump into a huge walking tank, Star-Lord, a newly added playable character, as well as the team-up companion characters Gamora, Groot and Drax; their available looks ranging from the classic cartoons to the movie versions.
One of the other more interesting features for us was the introduction of X-Men’s Rogue as a playable character. In the comics, Rogue is able to steal other mutants’ powers and therefore required an entirely new mechanic to be created for her implementation into Marvel Heroes. Players will be able to collect powers from all manner of AI enemies (including Raid bosses) and other players and use them to create their own unique version of Rogue, switching between the powers that they have collected. And finally, players will also be able to act as the first playable villains, with Venom, Magneto and Juggernaut being the first to join the extensive cast of currently more than 40 heroes/ classes!
We recorded this meeting, so feel free to watch it right here. And in case you are interested, we'll also publish an interview with David Brevik very soon.
