Marvel Heroes 2015 isn’t precisely an all-new MMO but a fresh incarnation of the original Marvel Heroes, a popular Hack & Slash title set in the Marvel universe and developed by Gazillion and David Brevik, the creator of Diablo. Officially launched on June 4, 2013, the game has recently been relaunched after just a year as Marvel Heroes 2015 to highlight all the new additions and changes that had been taken place since release. We’d already playtested the MMO during OBT and came to the conclusion that it already was a quite solid Diablo-style ARPG, absolutely great for a free-to-play title and not pay-to-win at all. We’ve also recently put it to a test with our F2PMeter - check out the respective episode here.
So let’s find out what has changed with the new rebranded version of the game and what’s new.
In addition to the brand-new, pretty cool and fully animated intro, players will evidently realise first and foremost that the amount of available heroes and costumes has significantly increased. Developers have undertaken huge efforts to create a wide and intriguing roster, the results being noticeable for everybody. They moreover didn’t forget about taking care of new players, and even increased the selection of the initial free heroes from five to eleven, making available some of the most popular and beloved heroes from the comics and films, e.g. The Human Torch, Storm, Captain America, and Rocket Raccoon from the recent film Guardians of the Galaxy.
We entered the game in order to check out one of the new heroes on our own: Gambit, which pretty delighted us. We’re not sure whether this was just our impression, but we found the new characters’ animations nicer and smoother in comparison to those of the heroes available in the game’s previous version. Additionally, the gameplay style (of Gambit at least) was more fun and dynamic, with movement skills, stuns, knockbacks and different effects that interact with each other allowing you to create interesting combos.
Many of the older characters have been overhauled as well in order to be up to pair with the new ones. And in regards heroes, there are new systems available, one of which is the really appreciated “Team-Up” which offers an array of NPC heroes such as Groot, Falcon or Spiderman players are able to purchase and equip. Team-Up heroes possess their own items and skills and will jump into combat at the player’s command to assist throughout the battle.
In addition to the new heroes and costumes, Marvel Heroes 2015 also boasts a new chapter, multiple new PvE modes, end-game raids as well as new difficulty settings. The new modes can be tackled solo or on company of others, who will be picked by an automated matchmaking system, and include survival-style gameplay modes such as X-Defense, which tasks players with defending the X-mansion against waves of enemy invaders while protecting the students, One Shot stories and more. We checked out X-Defense and found it was pretty fun and kind of a mini-game allowing players to take a break from their usual story missions or XP/ loot farming. A new PvP mode has been added as well, which we didn’t manage to try out though, as the queues to enter a match were pretty long.
There are furthermore new systems in order to provide players with more variety and freedom, such as an expanded and more comprehensive crafting system, an additional account-wide progression system, called Omega System, which enables players to spend points on all their characters, achievements, login rewards and additional gear slots for legendary insignias, rings and more.
It’s obvious that a plethora of new things has been added to an already competitive free-to-play MMO. You may be right in saying that many games actually come up with new content after release without feeling the need to relaunch with a new name after just a year. However, in the case of Marvel Heroes 2015, it’s up to you to judge whether the additions and changes are sufficient to justify a rebranding or whether it just was a marketing move. We personally can only state that we truly appreciate the developing team’s efforts to keep their creation always fresh and enjoyable for all their players by delivering new and intriguing content and new playable heroes. The game has already been fun, it is even more fun now absolutely worth giving it a shot.
