Today, we want to provide you with further information on the classes that will be available in the upcoming free-to-play sci-fi fantasy MMORPG Skyforge, which currently is in development at Obsidian Entertainment and the Allods Team.
The developers have decided for a system that is non-classic and absolutely unique with MMORPGs and influenced by the MOBA genre, the most popular online game section these days. Just like a MOBA, Skyforge doesn’t force players to decide for a particular class but grants access to all the available classes, not requiring players to individually advance each class. You may initially select the Cryomancer, for instance, and after playing for some time change your class to the Lightbinder in case you realise that fighting at long-range isn’t your preferred style of play. While evolving their character, more classes will gradually become available.
In Skyforge, classes are separated into multiple groups depending on level of access. When starting out, players may choose among 3 classes: Cryomancer, Paladin and Lightbinder. Having completed several adventures and received rewards, they gradually gain access to 5 intermediate and advanced classes in each instance. The Berserker would be an example of an intermediate class which will require players to play for some days before gaining access to it, whereas the Gunner belongs to the group of advanced classes which will require players to spend a few weeks in game in order to develop their character until that class becomes available to them.
Additionally, players are completely free to switch between classes at any time and anywhere without having to head to a special place in a specific city as long as their group isn’t engaged in combat.
Those who prefer sticking to one specific role may now question why this change would be necessary and developers state that this is due to the fact that there’s a wide selection of classes for one particular role which offer their own unique qualities each. For example, the Gunner and the Cryomancer are both experts at long-ranged combat; however, they differ a lot regarding their gameplay and style. The Gunner would be the ideal choice if you like to hunt down all enemies you come across without stopping in front of anybody. And if you prefer positional combat instead, you should rather consider the Cryomancer due to their excellent crowd control abilities.
The Lightbinder isn’t only a simple DD, but an excellent supporter with additional protection skills as well. Likewise, melee classes can also differ greatly from one another. The Paladin, for instance, is a DD aiming at single targets while the Berserker is able to take on multiple foes at once since their skills rather focus on area damage. Players will find their own entertainment in this: by advancing the different classes, they will gradually master a role, perfecting the art of close quarters or long-ranged combat.
Players are able to focus on maxing out their character by playing and developing one type of class, but there is also the option of going further and developing classes which fill other roles in a group. This will probably help players when they come across groups that need to fill a specific role. Does "need tank, last slot" sound familiar to you?
In Skyforge, the risk of not finding the required class is very minimal. It only takes a few minutes to become a Paladin and open up the first few skills in the Progress Chart. The class switch system is designed in way that even when players first switch classes from they have developed, the new class they switch to will also be as developed due t the fact that the main attributes are tied to the character and not the class. Changing classes opens up dozens of new strategies in raids or even against regular monsters. If a boss has increased resistance to long distance attacks, there’s the possibility to switch to Paladin or Berserker to inflict damage from up close.
Tactics are important in PvP as well! During battle at the Ring of Immortals arena, players need to capture strategic points. In order to get the opponent out of an occupied area, it is easier to do so as a Lightbinder and Gunner. However, for keeping control of the point you will need another combination – e.g. a Lightbinder and Berserker. There are various options and teamwork and player ingenuity will also play an essential role.
When players pick a class in the game, they will always know that they won’t be restricted to that choice, as they are allowed to switch to another role and open a new world by playing another class. Tactics in PvP and raids, game diversity, development of new builds - all this is possible with the opportunity to change classes at any moment.
