During GamesCom 2014, we were able to meet the guys of Robot Entertainment to take a hands-on look at Orcs Must Die: Unchained, the MMO sequel to the popular Orcs Must Die. For our meeting, we were able to take part in a 5v5 match-up against another team somewhere in a different booth. Having played the game once or twice, we already had a better idea of what we were doing, the developers, however, provided us with a lot of useful hints during the fight.
First off was character selection, we chose to try out Midnight, the shadowy assassin that can go stealthy, do lethal hits and also disarm enemy traps by walking over them. We thought the damage plus extra support might be helpful for our team, moreover we’d previously only tried out the ranged heroes (Pyro and Sorceress).
Our available items and traps were already pre-loaded onto the account, so we didn’t need to play around with those, and once everyone chose their characters, the fight was well underway. An early rush by the opposition had their waves of minions knocking on our teleporter room surprisingly early in the game, but as these were still low-level, we managed to get rid of them easy enough.
The game didn’t look much different from what we’d seen during our previous trials, which doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing as the game indeed looks extremely polished and plays like a released final version. That said the developing team assured us they are adding new content in some form or another almost every week, so the evolution and development of the game is most definitely ongoing.
Our match went pretty well for us and actually resulted in a 20 – 0 thrashing for the opposing team that hadn’t even come close to breaching our final room’s defences. All in all, we worked really well as a group although we were all pretty new to the game, which was testament on how easy it is to pick up and start playing with a really shallow, yet fun, learning curve.
Anyone unsure of where the game stands in regards to a tower defence or MOBA-style MMO shouldn’t worry about that too much, as the game plays very little like neither, but is still exciting and extremely competitive. When asking the devs in the room about any concerns or complaints from the community, we were told about a similar initial hesitation, since the original Orcs Must Die player base were unsure about what to expect and a little resistant at first, but now have fully embraced the game and given it a great reception.
No definitive word on Open Beta, but we were assured it’s right around the corner and that after release the team is hoping to constantly add new content and new heroes every few months to keep the game fresh.
