We have a new feature that we'd like to bring to you; Players Speak, where we've sought out some keen minds and opinionated members of the community to get them to give us some feedback and thoughts on some of the best (and worst) F2P games on the market. Our search is over and we have our final seven, a mixed bag of folks with their own interests, genre preferences and ideas on what makes and breaks an MMO.
Our first member is JimSlam, a self-proclaimed e-sports enthusiast who loves to watch and play and generally takes anything that focuses on competing against other players or competitive endgame "bragging rights" content. IAMJohn is more of a casual player going solo, blaming life for not giving him enough time to play as much as he used to. KittyPride calls herself a "virtual horder" and loves collections, achievements and is a general pack rat in MMORPGs where she can't force herself to throw away a cool looking (and ultimately useless) item. Ballgon "impressed" us with his rant about "rehashed, reskinned and repackaged F2P games in an already oversaturated market of sub-par products". Tenbrae likes nothing more than roaming around the forest talking to the animals and trees and living off the land, no she's not some nomad gone mental but is the resident roleplayer of the group and has run her own MMORPG roleplaying communities. Elijah is pretty hardcore, racking up around ten hours of a gaming a day, spends his cash on his gaming rig and, in all honesty, is probably the person we're most jealous of! Finally we have Your_Nemesis who is the oldest of our gamers and has been at online gaming pretty much sits its inception, playing the first MMORPGs at release to which he likes to think of as "the glory days".
So with our reviewers signed up we asked their opinions on our first game... Hearthstone.
JimSlam:
It's pretty funny this was the first game as I've actually played Hearthstone for a long time, so I might already come across as biased as I love it. I play a few MMOs semi-competitively and Hearthstone is definitely one of my go-to games when I want some less intense competition but still equally as fun. I watch streams of a lot of games, and YouTubers channels that focus on e-sports, but Hearthstone is one of my most regular watches.
Watching the pros you learn a lot, seeing new decks surface onto the scene and so for new players that want to get competitive it's definitely a good idea, overall the game is pretty easy to pick, but is pretty hard to master. Some guys that play more professionally are pretty amazing and there’s some crazy decks out there.
IAMJohn:
I have actually played Hearthstone, so that's a good start, my friends coaxed me over as a couple of them play and are really into it. It's pretty easy to get into with a shallow learning curve, though you have to be really careful with which classes you pick as some are really unforgiving from new players (like the Warlock, which I really struggled with). I haven't had the heart to uninstall the game yet as every once in a while when I don't have much time to play like to crack out a quick Arena match or two.
KittyPride:
I'd heard of the game but never really played it before, nor any other type of trading card game to be honest, so it was all a little bit new. The actual matches are pretty cool, though I didn't do much PvP and focused mostly on beating the AI with all the different classes to unlock more of the base cards for each class whilst seeing which I liked the most (gotta say Rogue was pretty fun). Unpacking the cards is so exciting, kinda like RNG lockboxes in MMORPGs, and I can only imagine it gets more fun when you know about the different cards and find one you've been waiting for. I think I'll probably find some time to keep playing to be honest, so thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Ballgon:
I found the game to be pretty boring, dumbed down and, as someone who has played TCGs before, pretty childish with the silly cartoony graphics and baby-ish gameplay, it's clear it's marketed to the masses and sacrifices integrity for popularity. Other game systems have been far more developed and provide more strategic thinking, Hearthstone is for people that lack that in their personal skill set.
The game is marketed towards the WoW fanbois and, if it wasn't for their willingness to eat up everything Blizzard serves, this game would have probably already died. Fact. Try a little harder next time Blizzard #WoWFanboisDream #NoSkillRequired
Tenebrae:
I've played World of Warcraft for years, so obviously know quite a lot about Hearthstone and I've been curious every time I log into Battle.net, but if I'm being honest the game just isn't really my cup of tea :( I like that some of the key characters from the games lore have been included (always much love for the sexy Jaina Proudmoore, so she was my choice for my starting deck), but whilst I found trying to build a deck interesting it's still a bit too involved if you are just playing casually, at least to try and build a deck where you don't get beat up on all the time.
Elijah:
Ahhh Hearthstone, we meet again, too many times to mention have I been drawn into playing until the early hours and letting it part me with my money to open just... one... more... pack... Funnily enough I try not to spend cash in games because I normally play them long enough to get what I'd want, but there's something about Hearthstone's card packs that really draws you in. Shut up and take my money!
I haven't played for a while, usually when one of the expansions come out I hardcore the hell out of it for a week, dusting off the old cards (and buying new ones!) until I get my fix and then carry on playing some of the other games I have. It's fun though for anyone thinking about playing, can be a little hard to get into but it's worth a shot and the more you play the better you get (helps that you get more cards as well!).
Your_Nemesis:
I'm an old Magic the Gathering player, so I know all too well about TCGs and have played a few of them online over the years, though hung up my physical Magic collecting a long time ago. When Hearthstone was first released I was a little sceptical that it was just a kids version of a TCG, and I suppose in some ways it is in that I think it helps facilitate players into the genre who may then look for a more complex system. Fun little title, but a bit too basic for what I've become accustomed to over the years and honestly I don't have the time or the money to get as deep into another TCG without perhaps selling off my old cards first.
And there you have it, that's what our players think, but most importantly what do you think both about Hearthstone and about our players' opinions? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
