Star Trek Online is a journey into the awesome sci-fi world created by the legendary Gene Roddenberry and developed into an MMORPG by Cryptic Studios, it is a journey outside the know solar system, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before! In this fantastic MMORPG that brings the Star Trek franchise to life players can fly their own ship, they can create their own character and head planet side, they can battle across the stars with all manner of factions and create their own epic story.
Captain Customization
The customization for your character is extensive. Not only with the visual aesthetics where you can choose from a variety of known Star Trek universe species depending on the Faction you choose (Federation, Klingon or Romulan), but there is the possibility to create a more original looking “Alien Race” or making a cannon race not necessarily represented in the game. From here you also have to choose your career path from three core Star Trek roles; Tactical, Engineering and Science, each of which gives access to different skills for both ground and space combat.
Your Own Ship
As well as creating a character you have your own ship and crew to customize. Also determined by your choice of three major factions players have a huge number of ships to choose from that provide all types of skills and options for PVE and PVP combat. Ships are fully customizable with armor, weapons, technology and even crew members that will provide other utility and boosts.
Character and Ship Content
You can explore and fight in your ship or as your character. Whilst most games provide one or the other Star Trek Online allows players to explore a fully sandbox open space, finding missions, jumping into combat against other players and enemy factions and playing like a space simulator. From here they can head planet side to visit a wide variety of worlds and space stations as your character, taking on missions and exploring these strange worlds in person; something that is iconic to the show and well represented in the game.
The Foundry
Create your own instanced based missions. The power of the Foundry has also been seen in Cryptic’s other MMORPG Neverwinter, here players can create their own instanced based mission environments, designing the world/room/area from scratch using hundreds of items, or some quick to lay down templates, decorating it, adding in NPCs that can have various dialogue options when interacted with, and of course enemies to battle! This user created content is used to add more playable content in the game but is also a perfect tool for roleplayers to create their own RP environments.
Voice Acting
Lots of voiced characters in the game. This feature has become more important over the years with more characters having voiced quests and dialogue, but more importantly is that some of the iconic characters from the series have actually been voiced by the original actors that portrayed them in the TV shows and movies! It really does bring the game to life and fully immerse you in the Star Trek universe.
Agents of Yesterday Expansion
A blast to the past! The most recent expansion (July 2016) allows players to head back to the 23rd century, set just after the original Star Trek series (Captain Kirk era) and create a character for a new mini-faction known as the Temporal Operative Specialization (TOS also actually referring to “The Original Series”), where these TOS characters can join other factions to complete end game time travel content. The new characters have the look and feel of the original TV show, retro uniforms (miniskirts..) and old-style computer hubs aboard their ship complete with corny sci-fi background sound effects; the nostalgia is real and it is fantastically recreated.
