For our next “Things We Love About…” we take a look at the biggest Korean MMORPG around that continues to dominate both Eastern and Western markets; Aion. This fantasy based MMORPG lets players step into the shoes of powerful “angelic” Daeva, split into two factions they are the Elyos and the more devil like Asmodians, an endless battle of the ages has all the classic trimmings of an MMORPG and is consistently one of our favourite free to play pics; but what makes the game so good? Well here’s just a few things that we love about Aion.
- The Pace of Combat - Fast, dynamic and interesting combat. One of the things we really love about Aion is the combat system, particularly when it comes to PVP (given that the game generally focuses on PVP content), with players having so many available skills it definitely feels like the game is a dream for customization and players being able to make whatever type of character they like after they have chosen their class; with lots of skill options that can be combo’d there’s a multitude of variations that can be used (even if some are extremely situational). None of the classes feel particularly overpowered when it comes to PVP or PVE, and Aerial combat is more than a novelty and is instead an exciting combat experience that few other MMORPGs have been able to match.
- PVP - There are lots of options when it comes to PVP. Following on the from the generalised Combat, more specifically when it comes to PVP we feel Aion has really done a good job in keeping both the classes and the PVP modes balanced in the game. Whilst players will get advantages from gear, as is pretty typical with MMORPGs, the divide between gear versus skill isn’t that big and a competent player can as often as not defeat an incompetent player who might have slightly better gear. With the games foundations being heavily PVP focused, particularly with open world PVP, this for us is extremely enjoyable as we’re big PVP fans. Whilst other players may be put off with the gank fest that inevitably occurs as higher levels have to start questing in open PVP areas, there’s enough safe zones for them to hide in. When it comes to the whole PVPVE aspect we love the quests that encourage players to get involved in PVP and reward them; giving them a quest to kill a player of a specific rank, as opposed to just going beating an AI enemy boss, is a real boon to the game.
- Character Creation - The character creation tool is extremely detailed. Unfortunately an are often overlooked or ignored by a lot of MMORPG developers is having a strong character creation system, fortunately Aion doesn’t have that problem and is in fact one of the most detailed and flexible systems we’ve ever experienced. With dozens and dozens of sliders, scales, shaders and detail options players can practically make any character look that they can imagine; from skinny 7ft humans with giant pot bellies, or small purple critters with wide bodied and extremely tiny heads. For the roleplayer in us we have to say that being able to explore the vivid and detailed game world with our own unique character definitely adds the that definitive MMORPG feel that is so often missed.
- Grind Reduction - The level grind has eased up. As a Korean MMO Aion has always been considered to be one of the grindiest games on the market, a slow and tedious process suited to the Korean audience but has often been a point of contention for western audiences. Thankfully over time the level of grind players are forced into has been pulled back, making the game much more enjoyable and accessible to players that hate to have to kill the same stuff over and over. Now players are able to hit max level in a matter of a couple of weeks of general play.
- World Design - The environments are glorious. Whilst the graphics themselves can be hit and miss in places, jumping from amazing to fairly bog standard (and even dated at times even with the revamp), the actual world design and explorable environments are simply breathtaking and you’re never short of a captivating vista to marvel at, or a witnessing whether effects that completely transform an area. The imagination that has gone into the world and the massive differences between regions have succeeded almost without comparison from other MMORPGs in making a truly remarkable, living and fantastical game to just walk around and take in the scenery.
These are some of the things that we love about Aion, but what do you think? What do you love about this game? Would you add anything else to the list? We await your opinions! Let us know!!!!!
